They Took Me Out to the Ballgame

August 10, 2010 – 1:43 am

Since I first stepped into All-Pro Freight Stadium in January of 2009, it looked like it was going to be quite the destination. I went back a few more times, chronicling the development, and knew I’d have to get there. Little did I realize it would take me ’til now to make it. Thanks to an outing sponsored by St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, I took my family and my extended family to a game Sunday night. Absolutely enjoyed ourselves! There were contests, and giveaways and contests, and then more contests in between the innings. The game was exciting, Cruisers vs the Crushers, and though the visitors won, the Crushers kept it close, losing only by a 6-5 score. Hope the video inspires you to make it out to a game!!

PhotoPhun Challenge: Monuments

August 8, 2010 – 4:19 am

I suggested this week’s Challenge, Monuments, and had thought of it a few weeks back, right after my last suggestion (whatever it was).  I had pseudo-ulterior motives, calling it when I did because I was going out to Oberlin to try something. Matter of fact, the first pic in the “Out of Town” is what gave me the idea for monuments. Anyway, enough blabbin’, on with the pics, and don’t forget to see what Lisa shot!!

For the dedications of this monument, click here and here.

Lorain was a station on the Underground Railroad, the dedication is here.

The butterflies are back at the French Creek Nature Center!! Check this out!

It Was A Dark And Stormy Night…

August 3, 2010 – 10:21 am

I would love to be able to go storm-chasing some summer. The thrill of running after (and from) a supercell and/or a tornado would be incredible! But, since those cost a bit o’ cash, I’ll have to pass for now.  Settling for the shots below will be as close as I’ll get for a while. These were shot July 28th.

PhotoPhun Challenge: Shadows

August 1, 2010 – 4:24 pm

Lisa called “Shadows” for this week’s PhotoPhun Challenge. Lisa’s contributions are right here.

Screen door hinge with the shadow of a lawn chair across it.

Thumbs up to Lisa for a cool challenge this week!

Not a lot of shadow, but I liked this one.

Caught this downtown. Bonus points if someone knows where…?

Next week’s challenge was announced earlier this week, it’s “Monuments,” and Bryan was kind enough to give us a good definition:

mon·u·ment (mny-mnt)
n.
1. A structure, such as a building or sculpture, erected as a memorial.
2. An inscribed marker placed at a grave; a tombstone.
3. Something venerated for its enduring historic significance or association with a notable past person or thing: the architectural monuments of ancient Rome; traditions that are monuments to an earlier era.
4.
a. An outstanding enduring achievement: a translation that is a monument of scholarship.
b. An exceptional example: “Thousands of them wrote texts, some of them monuments of dullness” (Robert L. Heilbroner).
5. An object, such as a post or stone, fixed in the ground so as to mark a boundary or position.
6. A written document, especially a legal one.

Funnin’ in Oberlin

July 28, 2010 – 11:37 pm

I’ve wanted to try this for a long time, but couldn’t come up with the right setting. Being in Oberlin Wednesday morning, this looked like the perfect opportunity.

Still Searching…

July 26, 2010 – 10:00 pm

Still looking for new stuff. Interesting shots. Trying the high-speed-slow-it-down has a certain attraction. With Kristen’s help and her lightning-fast stabbing motion with the needle, I was able to get these shots out of the group that we tried. What did I learn? I need a faster shutter speed for still-frame. Video doesn’t move fast enough.  And I need to make myself a light box.

PhotoPhun Challenge: Memories

July 24, 2010 – 8:14 pm

At Grammy’s suggestion, this week’s PhotoPhun Challenge is “Memories.” One thing and one thing only came to my mind to do for this, and I didn’t take either of the photos. Time passes and slip-slides away so quickly, it’s like a blink of an eye, and you have to stop and say, ‘Wow, was it THAT long ago?’ You go from ‘Da-da’ to ‘Daddy’ to ‘Dude’ in the space of a week it feels like, but has, in reality, been almost 15 years. As you can see from the pics, I used to have more hair and less grey. Having less hair now is my choice, having more grey now is not.

That said, this is going up early. Be sure to check out Lisa to see what she’s done.

Any suggestions for the next PhotoPhun Challenge? Let’s hear’em!!!

Short But Sweet

July 22, 2010 – 10:48 pm

Always looking to try something new. Was feeling somewhat stagnant. You’ve got to be tired of flower shots. I’m tired of the same old sunset shots. Slideshows are old hat, but definitely fit the bill if I’ve got a lot of photos that I think you’d like. PhotoPhun is a breath of fresh air, and definitely has me (and Lisa and Bryan) doin’ stuff we wouldn’t normally do.  Getting out and about on a moment’s notice isn’t always possible, and trying other things is necessary. One of the reasons I bought this camera was for its video capability. So, taking a hint from one of the promo’s for the show “Royal Pains,” I tried this with my neighbor’s son, Colton and my son, Michael.

Hopefully, there will be longer and more interesting videos to follow. (Slowed this down a bit, helps a lot.)
